Common interest can be hard to find but good teachers will find a way to connect with the students even if they have to fake it. For example, if a student likes to sing, I can create activities including songs even if I am not interested in singing. Therefore, the student will think that I do and thus naturally create a connection. Thirdly, it is better to be more proactive rather than reactive. Intense planning and organization can ultimately make my job much easier. It is better to plan for solutions to problems that may arise rather than wait for the problems to arise and then try to address them. Being proactive does not replace being adaptive. No matter how well I plan to do my class, there will be surprises. However, being proactive can cut down on these surprises tremendously, thus making me more effective overall. The fourth quality, is that , an effective teacher demonstrates a caring attitude. Even if one loves one’s job, he or she can struggle in this area, not because he does not care but because he gets caught up so much that forgets that his students have a life outside the school. Good teachers know how to balance their relationship with their students without getting too far in t5he student’s life. Once a student believes that a teacher truly cares for him or her, then there is no limit to what the student can achieve. Fifthly, what makes teaching so exciting is that kids learn differently and me, as a teacher, I should find and utilize different strategies and differentiated learning to reach my students. What works for one student, will not work for every student. I must be willing to be creative and adaptive in my lessons to meet all my students’ needs. Next point is that, as a teacher I should be a good communicator either with my students and their parents and their social environment. As a good teacher, I must seek out professional development opportunities and try to apply something new to my class every year. For example, new technology and new educational tools as well as a variety of media. Also, I should be able to push my students harder than an average teacher and challenge them I think so as these are the teachers that I remember and want to thank because of how well they prepared us for life after my time with them and I would want the same for my students. Lastly, as a qualified teacher, I must understand the content that I teach and know how to explain it in a manner that my students understand. There are teachers who do not know the content well enough to teach it effectively. There are teachers who are truly experts on the content, but struggle to effectively explain it to their students. The importance of establishing an appropriate classroom environment which supports learning as follows: Classroom environment are extremely important for students and teachers also. The emotional environment also affects the learning environment of my students and how well they receive instruction. As a good teacher, I should create a welcoming atmosphere where my students feel safe and willing to share. My classroom should represent the students equally and everyone should know each other. I can use humor in my classes to create a more positive environment. A good physical aspect of the class will encourage the students to learn and participate as students are willing to give their best when they feel at ease. I must ensure that every student has a respectful classroom environment where their contributions matters. Establishing a positive classroom environment where students are respectful of themselves and others will help reduce the risk of conflicts. The type of classroom environment that a teacher creates and encourages can either increase or decrease a student’s ability to learn and feel comfortable as a member of the class. My classroom environment should do as much to foster cooperation and acceptance as the teaching methods that I will use. Classrooms that encourage emotional well-being create an atmosphere for both learning and emotional development. I think that a warm classroom environment can lead to increased academic achievement and a sense of pride for the student himself, the teacher and the school. Classrooms are very public places. Everyone knows who does what and how well or how badly. According to Erickson, performing in school is a â€Å"risky business†, especially for students who do not do well. They have a number of ways of responding, including withdrawing, not trying, or becoming a class clown. All these issues point to the importance of developing a positive environment in learning, a climate in which children and adults feel secure and willing to engage in appropriate risk-taking and know that they will be supported in their efforts. A teacher often has to face many difficulties. If he does not love his job, teaching may turn out to be a burden for him. In such cases, the teacher will not be giving the best of himself and pupils are likely to lose from this situation. A teacher should be passionate and enthusiastic about his job. This would reduce the boredom that usually arises and create a positive environment for pupils to enjoy learning. The abilities and skills of a teacher as elaborated above are normally reflected in the practices he adopts in teaching. It is also vital for any teacher to create a positive classroom environment for his pupils, both from a physical and emotional perspective. The physical environment which relates mainly to desk arrangement, student placement and classroom structure should accommodate an inclusive learning milieu. If pupils are placed in areas that are best suited for their needs, they will be able to perform better. In addition, if the works prepared by the pupils are displayed in the classroom, this would help in developing a sense of belonging to the classroom and act a sign of appreciation for their hard work. This would help instill confidence in them and encourage them to progress. Furthermore, it is the teacher’s responsibility to value each and every one of the pupils so that each pupil feels special and important. Teachers should treat all questions from pupils seriously and should not intimidate or make fun of them as this would create a dent in their confidence. They should encourage pupils to think, ask questions and also make them participate in group activities so as to broaden their general knowledge. The pupils should also be granted intermittent breaks and interesting/stress busting activities in between the regular learning sessions to refresh themselves. In part two of Silas Marner Essay The readers are also told that that Godfrey is in fact, secretly married to Molly Farren, with whom he was a child. Dunstan is the only other person who is aware of this situation and blackmails Godfrey, threatening to inform the Squire, how his handsome son is married to that nice, young women, Molly Farren, and was very unhappy that he couldnt live with his drunken wife. (Chapter 3 pg 22) Godfrey fears the Squire finding out because he worries about losing his position of the upcoming squire, and also Nancy Lammeter, since he must irrevocably lose her as well as his inheritance. (Chapter 3 pg 24) So although we are told that Godfrey is, open-faced and good natured, he also could be considered as a very self centered and self serving character. He doesnt face up to the consequences of his actions, and has secrets which he is not prepared to reveal incase they affect his current life style. Inside, he is very conniving and two faced. When Silas turns up at the Red House on New Years Eve, seeking a doctor, holding a little girl and revealing how a woman is injured in the snow outside, Godfrey knows straight away who it is and is shocked and afraid. He is worried that Molly will reveal his secret to the villagers. There was a terror in his mind at that moment the women might not be dead. (Chapter 13 pg 99) He is more concerned with finding her dead than the possibility of saving her, because it will leave him free to marry Nancy, and his inheritance will be safe. Yet again to the villagers, Godfrey appears to have the best interest of the women in mind, by making sure she is not injured and to be assistance. However his inner thoughts betray his shallowness and his ultimate self interest. Deeper down there was a sense that he ought to except the miserable wife and fulfill the claims of the helpless child. But he had no moral courage enough to contemplate the active renunciation of Nancy as possible as him (Chapter 13 pg 101) Equally, his treatment of Eppie is also self serving. Godfrey has the opportunity to claim her, but chooses not to. Silas says, fill anybody shoes, theyve got a right to take her from me, (Chapter 13 pg 102). His other opportunities include: Marrying Nancy (which he does); Starting a fresh, (which he does); having Eppie in the open, but still wedding Nancy, (Which he does not do) Godfrey is anxious but ultimately his attitude is that his life will be better in the future with Nancy if he leaves his secret behind, if she is [dead] I shall be a good fellow in the future. (pg 101) Whereas Silas embraces Eppie, Its a lone thing and Im a lone thing. (pg 102) This turns out to be a fundamental change in the lives of the two men. After 16 years, Silas life has changed enormously since taking on Eppie. He isnt as shallow, and always worrying about money because he has a loving daughter who loves him. His work has slowed down, and he now socializes with the villagers, and has fashionably taken up smoking a pipe! More importantly, his faith has been restored, and is very content because he believes he has everything. Silas did not highly enjoy smoking but a humble sort of acquaintance in what was held to be good had become a strong habit of that new self which has been developed in him since he had found Eppie. (Chapter 16, pg 124) In comparison to Silas, Godfreys life hasnt turned out so positively. He feels discontent that he hasnt achieved anything in his life, because the use of squire has stopped and he feels that he is less than his father. Unfortunately Nancy and he remain childless, and he has no heir. I wanted to pass for childless once, Nancy I shall pass for childless now against my wish (Chapter 20 pg 151) Godfrey finally admits to parentage because he wants to adopt Eppie, to be able to make her an heir, and continue the family name within the Red House. He wants his child to become a lady and have a better life. Once more, even though this change may benefit Eppie, ultimately Godfreys reasons are self serving. Eppies response to Godfreys offer isnt as he expected. She declines his offer, as she wants to remain with her father that brought her up from a small child. She doesnt want to be a lady. Eppie wants to live in a way she is accustomed to, with different friends on the same social group as her own. Marrying Aaron would be forbidden if she was a lady, as he isnt upper class. On the other hand, Eppie isnt familiar with Godfrey, and doesnt see him as a father. Eppie would be lost without Silas, as they do everything together they drink from the same cup. Eppie fears of Silas going back to his old ways if she leaves him and wants to stay loyal to him, as he was the one who took her in as his own. I cant feel as Ive got any father but one Ive always thought of a little home where hed sit in the corner, and should fend and do everything for him: I cant think of no other home. (Chapter 19, pg 150) With the arrival of Eppie, both mens lives have been changed in very different ways. Silas is content with his life, his faith has been restored and his social life is better than ever. Whereas, Godfrey is disappointed with the arrival of Eppie, as he had all he ever wanted until she arrived, and his secret had been kept safe until then. Silas life in Lantern Yard consisted of faith, love, trust and relationships. After being framed and removed from the church, he decides to move to Raveloe, where he isolated himself from the community. Then his gold was stolen from his home, by Godfreys younger brother Dunstan. While Silas is out, Eppie then appears on his doorstep on New Years Eve, after her mother left her while she was injured. Silas takes her in and cares for her as if shes his own blood, believing she is a gift from god to replace his gold. From the up bringing of Eppie, he manages to bring himself out of isolation and regain his faith, relationships, respect and love. Eppie was beneficial to Silas in more ways than one. In Godfreys life, though, his secrets are hidden from the beginning until Eppie arrives. When he realized it was Molly outside Silas house, he was more concerned with finding her dead than alive, to prevent his secrets from being published. The main opportunity was to claim Eppie, but at first, he thought that his life in the future would be better with Nancy if Eppie was remained unclaimed. Unfortunately Nancy is unable to have children and produce an heir for him. This is when Godfrey realizes, as her biological father, that she could be that upcoming heir he desperately needs, to prevent his name leaving the Red House as a Squire. Godfrey puts forward an opportunity to Eppie, for her to move in with himself and Nancy, as, he would provide her with a better future. Eppies response isnt as he expected she says no! The reason is that Eppie doesnt want to lead the life of a lady, and have to change the social group of which she is part. Eppie wants to remain with Silas and look after him until the end, just like he has cared for her. This choice of Eppies, has rewarded those who nurtured her in this case, Silas. Overall, George Eliot wrote this book as a very moralistic novel. Silas deserved to be loved by Eppie as he provided her with a loving home, family and religion; all out of the goodness of his heart. So when Eppie decides she wants to stay with him, it rewards him and returns his gratitude. On the other hand, all of Godfreys choices were self serving. In the beginning he had an opportunity to claim Eppie from Silas, but failed to, supposing that his life will be improved with Nancy, without the difficulties of Eppie. Later on in the novel, he recognizes he made the wrong decision, as Nancy is unable to produce any heirs to take his place. Once more his actions are convenient for him because, he now realizes that Eppie could take that that position. In spite of this when Eppie declines his offer, he deserves it, as in the past he has been a selfish coward. Adam Smith Adam Smith, a brilliant eighteenth-century Scottish political economist, had the advantage of judging the significance ol colonies by a rigorous examination based on the colonial experience of 300 years. His overview has a built-in bias: he strongly disapproved of excessive regulation of colonial trade by parent countries. But his analysis is rich with insight and remarkably dispassionate in its argument. Adam Smith recognized that the discovery of the New World not only brought wealth and prosperity to the Old World, but that it also marked a divide in the history of mankind. The passage that follows is the work of this economic theorist who discusses problems in a language readily understandable by everyone. Adam Smith had retired from a professorship at Glasgow University and Was living in France in 1764-5 when he began his great work, The Wealth of Nations. The book was being written all during the years of strife between Britain and her colonies, but it was not published until 1776. In the passages which follow, Smith points to the impossibility of monopolizing the benefits of colonies, and pessimistically calculates the cost of empire, but the book appeared too late to have any effect upon British policy. Because the Declaration of Independence and The Wealth of Nations, the political and economic reliations of empire and mercantilism, appeared in the same year, historians have often designated 1776 as one of the turning points in modern history. The text On the cost of Empire, the eloquent exhortation to the rulers of Britain to awaken from their grandiose dreams of empire, is the closing passage of Smith's book. Adam Smith was a Scottish political economist and philosopher. He has become famous by his influential book The Wealth of Nations (1776). Smith was the son of the comptroller of the customs at Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland. The exact date of his birth is unknown. However, he was baptized at Kirkcaldy on June 5, 1723, his father having died some six months previously. At the age of about fifteen, Smith proceeded to Glasgow university, studying moral philosophy under "the never-to-be-forgotten" Francis Hutcheson (as Smith called him). Mike LaVine 12/12/12 Individual assignment 2 William Edwards Deming William Edwards Deming was an American statistician professor. He was also considered an author, consultant, and lecturer. Deming is most famous for his work done in Japan where he taught top management how to improve design, service, testing, quality, and sales through many of his unique methods. Deming made a significant contribution the Japan’s economic status for the innovation of high quality products. He is said to have the highest impact on Japanese manufacturing and business of any non-native Japanese person.Deming’s work also grew in the United States and he received the National Medal of Technology in 1987 and the Distinguished Career in Science award from the National Academy of Sciences in 1988. It is stated â€Å"Dr. W. Edwards Deming taught that by adopting appropriate principles of management, organizations can increase quality and simultaneously reduce costs (by reducing waste, rework, staff attrition and litigation while increasing customer loyalty). The key is to practice continual improvement and think of manufacturing as a system, not as bits and pieces. †Deming is well known for his Deming system of profound knowledge. Deming said all managers needed to have this system of profound knowledge and it consisted of four parts. First, was appreciation of a system; understanding the overall processes involving suppliers, producers, and customers of good and services. Second, Knowledge of variation; the range and causes of variation in quality, and se of statistical sampling in measurements. Next, the theory of knowledge; the concepts explaining knowledge and the limits of what can be known. And last, knowledge of psychology; concepts of human nature. One need not be eminent in any part nor in all four parts in order to understand it and to apply it. † â€Å"Once the individual understands the system of profound knowledge, he will apply its principles i n every kind of relationship with other people. He will have a basis for judgment of his own decisions and for transformation of the organizations that he belongs to,† says Deming. It is said the first thing that has to happen in this system is the person must be transformed. Once the person is transformed, he will see new meaning in his life. The individual will set a good example, be a good listener and teach others.Deming is also famous for his work in creating the 14 points for management. The System of Profound Knowledge is the basis for application of Deming's famous 14 Points for Management. These principles allowed managers to achieve a better understanding of how to transform business effectiveness. The 14 points were released for the first time in his book, Out of the Crisis. These 14 points are, 1. â€Å"Create constancy of purpose toward improvement of product and service, with the aim to become competitive, stay in business and to provide jobs. . Adopt the new ph ilosophy. We are in a new economic age. Western management must awaken to the challenge, must learn their responsibilities, and take on leadership for change. 3. Cease dependence on inspection to achieve quality. Eliminate the need for massive inspection by building quality into the product in the first place. 4. End the practice of awarding business on the basis of a price tag. Instead, minimize total cost. Move towards a single supplier for any one item, on a long-term relationship of loyalty and trust. 5.Improve constantly and forever the system of production and service, to improve quality and productivity, and thus constantly decrease costs. 6. Institute training on the job. 7. Institute leadership (see Point 12 and Ch. 8 of â€Å"Out of the Crisis†). The aim of supervision should be to help people and machines and gadgets do a better job. Supervision of management is in need of overhaul, as well as supervision of production workers. 8. Drive out fear, so that everyone m ay work effectively for the company. Break down barriers between departments.People in research, design, sales, and production must work as a team, in order to foresee problems of production and usage that may be encountered with the product or service. 10. Such exhortations only create adversarial relationships, as the bulk of the causes of low quality and low productivity belong to the system and thus lie beyond the power of the work force. 11. a. I believe the system of profound knowledge is very effective system in engaging all aspects of an organization. It takes into account suppliers, producers and consumers and how they are all interrelated and increases flexibility. I believe Deming’s key principles involve every aspect of the organization to improve output and workmanship as well as working conditions, this includes minimizing total cost for employees, improves management for employees, creates a better working environment, and improves output.As a manager, I would use the 14 key principle points in bettering the working environment for employees. It would allow me to better take on leadership and change in the organization, help to minimize total cost and move into long term relationships with other organizations, influence more training on the job to improve productivity, supervise to help people do a better job, and work as a team with other departments to increase company productivity. Cultural Awareness Essay

Culture and the environment affect a business in many ways. Culture is not simply a different language, a different shade of skin, or different styles of food. Culture, and the environment in which you are a part of, affect the running of day to day business operations of all companies’ day in and day out. This paper will assess how Linda Myers, from the article, â€Å"The would-be pioneer,† (Green, S. , 2011) was affected by the huge culture shock of working for a global conglomerate from Seoul, South Korea. We will discuss what went wrong with Ms. Myers approach to business, Hofstede’s five dimensions of culture as it pertains to the article, and make some recommendations based on the author’s thoughts. Let’s first start by discussing how culture and environment affect management in an institution. A culture and its environment affect the operations of a business because that culture generates practices based on its environment. To clarify, how a business sets its policies is based on cultural exceptions, like politics, points of view, whatever is considered the â€Å"norm† for that environment. In many cultures, it is also safe to assume that women do not have the same pull as a man in charge. An example of how women are belittled can be women in Middle Eastern countries that are forced to wear veils to cover their faces and walk behind their husbands, not hand in hand like in Western cultures. Politics plays a huge part in how a company runs as well. If a country is firm in the belief that men are the only way to accomplish goals and run the government, then companies under that government will more than likely have the same approach. Many countries still believe that men are superior and don’t quite believe that women should be in the workplace. We have seen American culture change to where women successfully run businesses. These gender based assumptions are inadequate to reality, however, some countries still hold on to those beliefs. For Ms. Myers, being successful in America, did not translate to being successful in South Korea. Although she was an executive, she had many barriers that hindered her from adequately helping the company in the ways that she wanted. Hofstede’s Five Dimensions of Culture  Dr. Geert Hofstede created the first four dimensions of culture in the 1970’s after analyzing statistical data from IBM over the course of many years. In the 1990’s he created the fifth dimension after noticing specific cultural differences in Asian countries and their ties to Confucian philosophy. (www. mindtools. com) The five dimensions are as follows: Power/Distance (PD), Individualism (IDV), Masculinity (MAS), Uncertainty/Avoidance Index (UAI), and Long Term Orientation (LTO). I will only discuss a few of these as they seem more prominent to this case. First, let’s talk about the Power/Distance (PD) dimension as it pertains to Ms. Myers in South Korea. Power/Distance (PD), â€Å"refers to the degree of inequality that exists- and is accepted- among people with and without power. A high PD score indicates that society accepts an unequal distribution of power, and that people understand â€Å"their place† in the system. Low PD means that power is shared and well dispersed. † (www. mindtools. com) As an example from the article, Myers goes on to say, â€Å"there were basically four levels: VP, director, manager, and worker bee. You only talked to people at your level. SK Telecom boasted that they were one of the first Korean cultures to rid themselves of a strictly hierarchal form of running. However, Myers saw that although they said that, they did not embrace that to the fullest. Merely putting something on paper does not constitute practicing the said task. In order for the company to have abolished the hierarchal form of leadership, they would have needed to instill better practices and allow more input from all levels of the company. Masculinity (MAS) refers to how a society views/values the traditional aspects of male versus female roles. This dimension ascertains that men are in the positions of power and women are to be in the home, or hold less valuable roles in the workplace. This example is considered a workplace with high MAS. A workplace with low MAS is considered to have male and female positions; however, those positions work closely together and do not get in the way of the work environment. This traditional view was another obstacle in Ms. Myers’ venture in Korea. The company brought her in to fix their issues with cultural growth, but did not utilize her to the best of her ability. She failed to recognize that the Eastern culture she was working for, did not allow her to have a longer â€Å"leash† like the American/Western companies she had worked for in the past. Uncertainty/Avoidance Index shows how anxiety of workers affects the workplace. High UAI is considered looking for rules and regulations for all situations. There is no â€Å"grey† area and everyone is to operate exactly the same. Low UAI refers to there being less rule writing and more personal growth and interpretation of the conflict or decision. In this article, I would say that SK Telecom had a high UAI however; Ms.  Myers herself was a person working with low UAI. Her anxiety and how she approached situations was not in-tune with the policies and procedures of the company. There were cultural boundaries such as language and expectations that she did not know how to confront. Although she was qualified for the position, she really was not prepared well enough to meet the tasks and policies of the company based on her experiences. The last dimension that really applies to this case is Long Term Orientation or LTO. This refers to how a company values a member’s loyalty/seniority in the company. Men and long time employees have more pull in the workplace. I feel as though SK Telecom valued the opinions of those members who had been with the company for a substantial amount of time. Bringing an outsider in to work, did not work with how the company operated internally. SK Telecom had high LTO and again Myers’ internal operation was with low LTO, a promotion of equality, creativity and individualism. Conclusion In this paper I discussed, The Would-Be Pioneer by Green. We discussed how the cultural differences affected Ms. Myers and how different South Korea is compared to Western culture. We also covered the four of five Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions that applied to the article. We discussed Power/Distance, Masculinity, Uncertainty/Avoidance Index, and Long Term Orientation, all of the factors that played a part in Myers’ failure as a consultant with SK Telecom. In the future, for those who look to work abroad, we should study as much about the culture as possible. We need to understand as much as possible about the work environment in which we work, if we wish to succeed in a foreign government.

Set in the city of Los Angeles, Rebel Without a Cause, considered by many critics as a classic example of American cinema, explores the lives of three teenagers caught within the "generation gap"Jim (James Dean), Judy (Natalie Wood), and John (Sal Mineo), nicknamed Plato. The only disadvantage of the structure is that it is not located in a significant market centre; where it would have been accessible to people living in other towns as well other than Holborn town. Transportation is excellent with several bus routes and Stratford High street (DLR line) station being located app roximately 300 meters form the premises. This makes it very easy to access it.
